Ewha-KOICA Africa Conference on

Good Practice of ODA: Voices from the Field

Dar es salaam, Tanzania, February 11 (Friday), 2011

The Graduate School of International Studies (GSIS) at Ewha Women¡¯s University and KOICA will be holding an international conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on February 11, 2011, on the theme of  ¡°Good Practice of ODA: Voices from the Field.¡± The purpose of the conference is to bring together various stakeholders in the development cooperation to discuss aid effectiveness from viewpoints of the fields. It will provide a valuable opportunity for participants to share knowledge, experiences and lessons learned from their work for the development of African countries. We are seeking papers on any topic related to good practices of ODA including (but not limited to) ones based on cases, first-hand experiences, and aid programs/projects.

The conference will be hosted by the Ewha GSIS and supported by KOICA. Ewha is the world¡¯s largest women¡¯s university with an enrollment of 23,000 students. Since its establishment in 1886, Ewha has played a critical role in enhancing the social position of women in South Korea. Upon entering the 21st century, it has shifted its focus to global partnership to create a more equitable society for women and men through education. The university continues to devote itself to further enhance and reinforce the shared endeavors of reducing global poverty. As a result, Ewha-KOICA Master¡¯s Program in International Studies (Women and Development) was launched in 2007 and so far over 100 female public officials from developing countries have earned master¡¯s degrees in international studies specializing in women and development.

Being one of only a handful of countries in the world to have successfully transformed from a recipient to donor country, South Korea is trying to play a responsible global role for aid effectiveness by hosting the Fourth High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Busan, South Korea in 2011. To further strengthen the role of South Korea in the development of Africa and achieving the MDGs, the South Korean government has promised to double the ODA volume to Africa until 2012. Accordingly, awareness about the urgent need for good aid practices to achieve the MDGS has been increasing. This conference will serve as an important opportunity to search for a new paradigm for aid effectiveness through the voice of various actors in the fields.

We would like to invite you to join this meaningful conference to have fruitful discussions. All accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

Prospective authors must submit a draft paper by December 30, 2010 and we will notify authors, whose papers will be accepted for presentation, by January 5, 2011. The authors, whose papers are accepted for presentation, must sent a final copy of her or his paper no later than January 25, 2011. Please email your paper to Ms. Junhee Lee at Ewha-KOICA office at ewhakoica@ewha.ac.kr
